Grooming

Persian cats need regular brushing (at least once a day) with a wide tooth metal comb.  Ideally a persian should be bathed for best look once a week- though it can be done every other week.  Ensure the cast is thoroughly brushed and no tangles or mats are present before bathing.  I recommend dawn diluted with water to degrease, then shampoo with baby shampoo.  It is very important that rinsing is done thoroughly (until water coming off is clear) and either blow dry (for best look) or air dry the coat.  Do NOT brush coat until animal is dry.

Kitten Behavior

Kittens are naturally playfull and without proper outlets and training can become destructive.  To avoid this be sure to provide your kitten not only with necessary food and water, but also a cat tree to play and climb on, toys suspended from a height (this will save your curtains) and regular play time with you :)

Choosing a "Good" Cattery

A good cattery will have someone who is willing to help you with your cat, has a knowledge base of cat related issues, and will take time to ensure a good fit between cat and owner.  Another thing to consider when looking at catterys is if you want a cat that is "raised underfoot" or caged.  Is the cat part of the family or in a seperate area?  Neither of these methods are necessarily better than the other, but if you are looking to seriously show a cat one who is used to baths and travel would be more ideal than say a cat that is part of the family.  Our cattery tries to get the best of both worlds in socializing as part of the family, yet used to the grooming required for show.

PKD

Polysystic Kideney Disease (PKD) is a deadly disease that is found mainly in Persian cats and inheretid.  Beacuse of this when purchasing a Persian cat or kitten care must be taken to find out if the parents (for a kitten) are PKD negative or if the cat itself is PKD negative.  This cattery is PKD negative- all cats have two PKD negative parents or have been tested themselves.
